The Directorate General of Civil Aviation on Friday derostered two Air India pilots after they erroneously landed AI 263 on an under-construction runway at Velana International Airport in Male, Maldives.
The incident happened on Friday at around 4 pm when the A320 Neo aircraft flying from Thiruvananthapuram to Male landed on an inoperational runway adjoining the main runway at the airport located on Hulhule Island. The runway is still under construction.
Air India officials said all 136 passengers and crew members were safe, but the main gear of the aircraft suffered some damage while being towed to the parking bay. A probe has been ordered into how the pilots landed on the wrong runway.
“Being a serious incident, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has been informed. Both the pilots have been derostered,” said DGCA Joint Director General Lalit Gupta. This is the second such incident involving an Indian airline in over a month.
